Dr. Joseph Dello Russo
Dr. Joseph Dello Russo was one of just a small group of doctors here in the United States who helped bring modern laser and LASIK eye surgery techniques to the fore of ophthalmology.
In the 1990s, his input was key to today’s widespread use of LASIK — so much so that the famous radio host Howard Stern dubbed him the “godfather” of laser vision surgery. Many of the LASIK procedures and safety guidelines in place now are the direct result of Dr. Russo’s pioneering work.
Having performed more than 160,000 laser and LASIK eye surgeries means that Dr. Dello Russo is one of the top three most-productive eye surgeons in the country. With such a wealth of experience behind him, it’s safe to say that your eyes are in exceptional hands with Dr. Dello Russo.
Since 1990, Dr. Dello Russo has also shared his extensive experience with other LASIK surgeons and practitioners. He regularly lectures at national and international conferences, has authored several academic papers based on his surgical practice, and offers open-access seminars in his practice where hundreds of other LASIK surgeons were trained by himself and his son.
Before Dr. Dello Russo focused primarily on his LASIK eye surgery career, he was one of the leading cataract surgeons in the country. In fact, many major developments in laser cataract treatments in the 70s and 80s are thanks to Dr. Dello Russo’s work.
Apart from performing some of the first implant surgeries, he introduced and prompted the widespread use of the Yag laser. Dr. Dello Russo is also responsible for the very first ambulatory surgical center (ASG) for the eyes in the Northeast. This latter accolade and the sum total of his contributions make Dr. Dello Russo a pioneer not just in ophthalmology, but in the medical profession as a whole.
Given his vast experience and in-depth, comprehensive knowledge of the LASIK eye surgery field, we’re inclined to agree with Mr. Stern.
