Dr. Joseph Dello Russo LASIK Expert and Pioneer
In 1980, Dr. Joseph Dello Russo purchased a research laser from a new company called VISX. Shortly after that, the FDA selected him to do research, testing the laser with patients. This research would eventually be a part of the FDA’s decision to approve LASIK in 1996.
Throughout the 1990s, Dr. Dello Russo’s input was key to making LASIK a common and widespread procedure like it is today — so much so that the famous radio host Howard Stern dubbed him the “godfather” of laser vision surgery. Many of the LASIK procedures and safety guidelines in place now are the direct result of Dr. Dello Russo’s pioneering work.
Since 1990, Dr. Dello Russo has also generously shared his ophthalmologic knowledge and extensive experience with other LASIK surgeons and practitioners. He has offered lectures at national and international conferences and has authored several academic papers based on his surgical practice. Dr. Joseph Dello Russo’s Outstanding Career in Ophthalmology
Before Dr. Joseph Dello Russo focused primarily on his LASIK eye surgery career, he was one of the leading cataract surgeons in the country. In fact, many major developments in laser cataract treatments in the 70s and 80s are thanks to Dr. Dello Russo’s work at the New Jersey Eye Center. Dr. Dello Russo founded the New Jersey Eye Center in 1967 and it continues to provide multi-specialty eye care today under the direction of his other son, Dr. James Dello Russo.
Apart from performing some of the first implant surgeries for cataracts, Dr. Joseph Dello Russo introduced and prompted the widespread use of the Yag laser. He was also responsible for the very first ambulatory surgical center (ASG) for the eyes in the Northeast. This latter accolade and the sum total of his contributions made Dr. Dello Russo a pioneer not just in ophthalmology, but in the medical profession as a whole.
