LASIK Surgery FAQs
1. How Long Is the LASIK Procedure/Surgery?
The surgery itself is actually very short—it’s typically completed in less than half an hour and you’ll be awake for the whole thing. However, there will be some preparation required before surgery including numbing eye drops. If you need medication to help you remain calm and relaxed that can be provided as well. After the surgery, your eyes will need to be shielded to protect your corneas and prevent you from rubbing your eyes. Ask your doctor how much time to allow for in the office for the entire procedure.
2. How Long Is the Recovery Time After LASIK?
Your recovery requires resting your eyes for several hours immediately following your procedure, so your doctor will likely encourage you to take a nap or rest your eyes in a dark room. You’ll need to avoid reading, looking at screens, or doing anything that makes your eyes work hard. The day after the surgery, you can likely return to most normal activities. At your follow-up appointment 24-48 hours after your procedure, your surgeon will check your healing to give you the go-ahead for driving and returning to work. You’ll still need to be cautious with your eyes for several weeks, so follow your surgeon’s instructions.
3. What Makes Me a Good Candidate for LASIK?
Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK. To be a good candidate for LASIK, your surgeon will need to ensure that your eyes, body, and overall health are such that you’re eligible for the procedure. First, you must be at least 18 years old and at a point where your hormones and vision have stabilized (for this reason, pregnant and nursing patients should consider waiting until menstruation has returned to normal). Additionally, you should be in good overall health as a compromised immune system or conditions like uncontrolled diabetes could mean you’re ineligible. Finally, your eyes should be healthy and free of disease and injury, and your corneas should be at least 0.5mm thick.
4. Can I Return to Work the Next Day After My LASIK Procedure?
You’ll have a post-operative appointment with your surgeon within 24-48 hours to check on your healing, your vision improvement, and discuss any symptoms or side effects you may be experiencing. Your doctor will also tell you during this appointment whether you’re cleared to drive, though driving at night may still be difficult for a little while. You’ll likely also get the go-ahead to return to work if you’ve not been told already that it’s okay. Keep in mind that you’ll still need to be very careful about not rubbing your eyes or getting any other substances in them.
5. How Probable Is It That I Will Have Complications After LASIK?
LASIK is one of the safest elective surgeries available today and has a complication rate of less than 1%. As such, it’s unlikely you’ll experience serious complications as a result of LASIK, but it’s still helpful to be aware of risks and side effects that may be a little more common. While side effects—including dry eye, glare, halos, double vision, or light sensitivity—typically resolve as they eyes heal, there is a small chance that they can persist. Additional risks include flap complications, corneal inflammation or infection, and over, under, or uneven correction. Just 1.2% of patients are dissatisfied with their vision improvement after LASIK.
6. How Likely Will I Get 20/20 Vision After LASIK?
A recent review of 97 peer-reviewed clinical studies found that 90.8% of study participants achieved 20/20 vision or better after LASIK eye surgery and 99.5% of participants achieved 20/40 vision or better. These statistics can be improved with more precise surgical methods, including custom LASIK and the use of technology like wavefront mapping to identify higher-order vision errors. At Dello Russo Laser Vision, we only perform custom procedures using the latest technology and techniques in order to ensure that we provide the best vision correction possible for each of our patients.
7. What Is the Likelihood That Something Might Go Wrong During My LASIK Procedure?
LASIK complications are very rare and experienced by fewer than 1% of patients, so the likelihood that something could go wrong during your procedure is very, very low. The rate of complications has also been shown to decrease with a surgeon’s experience, so finding an experienced eye surgeon is important for minimizing your likelihood of experiencing complications. While temporary side effects are not uncommon, they generally improve and disappear as the cornea heals. Keep in mind that the most modern technology also helps improve the safety of the surgery as well as helping your surgeon provide the most precise correction possible.
8. How much does LASIK eye surgery cost?
One of the first things you’ll want to know when you’re looking into LASIK is how much LASIK eye surgery costs. That can depend on a number of different factors, including:
- Your surgeon’s level of expertise and experience
- Whether you opt for a custom procedure
- The technology used for your surgery
- The techniques employed by your surgeon
As you’ve learned, if you want precise results and a lower risk of side effects, you should seek an experienced surgeon who uses modern techniques and technology. Of course, that means the best LASIK procedures are almost never the cheapest. However, many practices, including Dello Russo Laser Vision, frequently offer promotions or discounts that may lower your costs. If you’re curious about LASIK eye surgery cost with and without insurance, it can be helpful to know that insurance rarely pays for elective procedures like LASIK. However, it is worth a call to your insurance company to find out for certain. You can also call Dello Russo’s financial specialists to review any insurance benefits and find out what other financing you may qualify for to help you.
